Written By Team Captain, Vanessa Fierstadt

Greg Hilton is all-in-all a wonderful and unique individual. He began his fight with Ewing’s Sarcoma in May of 2004 at the age of 21. In late 2009 Greg and his family found out that he was no longer in remission, his second battle with this terrible disease. With his great spirit for life even in the roughest of days, Greg has shown all of us what courage, determination, and bravery truly means in our lives. He has a beautiful voice and enjoys playing the guitar, and keyboard.

Our team consists of Greg’s AMAZING parents. They have been by his side through it all, they are, to sum it up, his ANGELS. Many of our Gumba’s are just that, dear friends of Greg who have known him for years, through laughter, hardships, and celebration.

A Gumba is the name of the mushrooms on the Super Mario Nintendo game. It was and still is a term of endearment. A gumba simply means "life-long friend", and a “tough fighter”.

Greg and I have been close friends for quite a few years. Through our friendship I have learned what the word “friendship” truly means. We would do just about anything for one and other. Greg has a heart of gold, one of the sweetest people I have ever known. When I was informed that Greg relapsed, my heart was broken. I had a rough time excepting what the doctors had said. My way of coping was Relay For Life. It was medicine to my soul, a way for all of us as loved ones and friends to come together to support such a wonderful person. And I have been overwhelmed by the outpour of love and giving that has proceeded. This has been a wonderful way to honor him, and each individual and family member that has been touched in some way by this disease. What a great way to give back and fight right alongside them.

We have done several fundraisers for our team and are gathering wonderful items for several gift baskets at Relay. A Gumba bean bag toss and hands for more birthdays. Our team members are out participating in their own neighborhoods. Family and friends have been great supporters in donating to our team!
